Mia also greeted, "President Ji."
Ji Yanli stepped up beside Su Yu, their shoulders nearly brushing.
His gaze swept over the R&D manager's face. "Seems the R&D department has too much free time lately."
The manager stiffened.
While they had been slacking off—counting on Ji Yanli’s infrequent visits—he never expected to be called out so bluntly.
"President Ji, I’ll hold a meeting tonight to address discipline."
The previously smug employees now shrank like quails under a hawk’s stare.
So this is the power of authority, Su Yu mused.
No wonder people claw their way to the top.
Ji Yanli’s hand settled on Su Yu’s shoulder, feeling the slight tremor beneath his palm.
"Assistant Su will be working closely with me. If anyone struggles with cooperation, I’m happy to replace them with more… obedient alternatives."
[Translation: Old fools bullying my wife? Pack your desks by noon.]
[You always nail his inner monologue!]
[If I had a hubby who protected me like this, I’d marry him even if he lived in a cardboard box.]
[Greedy much?]
Warmth seeped through Su Yu’s left shoulder—and somehow, his chest too.
Is Ji Yanli insane? Is he really threatening to fire people over… me?
The manager forced a smile. "Understood, President Ji."
Ji Yanli ignored him, turning to Mia. "That’s enough for today. Thank you."
Mia’s lips parted as if to protest, but she merely nodded. "Of course."
Still reeling, Su Yu felt a warm breath against his ear as Ji Yanli murmured, "With me."
His mind was chaos, but his feet obediently followed the taller man.
Is he about to lecture me? It made sense—causing a scene on his first day was hardly professional.
But they started it! Ji Yanli had to know he wasn’t some pushover.
The moment the door closed, Su Yu blurted, "Hey, Ji Yanli—"
Ji Yanli halted abruptly. Su Yu crashed into his back, his nose smacking against firm muscle.
"Ow! What’s with the sudden stop?!" He rubbed his throbbing nose.
A faint chuckle. Ji Yanli turned, his face unreadable. "You called me."
Su Yu swallowed his retort.
"For the record, they provoked me first."
Ji Yanli sank onto the sofa. "Did I say you were wrong?"
…He hadn’t.
"Then why drag me up here?"
"Just informing you: I have a dinner engagement tonight. You’re dismissed early."
His eyes flicked over Su Yu’s face. "And for the record, I approve of how you handled that situation."
Approve? Of nearly brawling in the office?
Su Yu eyed him suspiciously. "Aren’t you worried I’ll embarrass you in public?"
"Better embarrassment than passivity. As my assistant, your conduct reflects on me. I won’t tolerate the Ji Group being perceived as weak."
Su Yu’s ears warmed. Maybe he’s not completely unreasonable.
Then Ji Yanli leaned back, smirking. "After all, even beating a dog requires the owner’s permission."
Never mind. He’s still a bastard.
"Who are you calling a dog?!"
"Hm. Who indeed?"
That infuriating grin made Su Yu’s fists clench. He nearly swung—until the bullet comments flashed in his mind ("Ji-ge gets off on your anger!"), forcing him to exhale sharply.
A knock interrupted them. Mia’s voice: "President Ji, it’s time to leave."
Ji Yanli stood, straightening his suit. "Don’t be late tomorrow."
As he brushed past, sandalwood scent enveloped Su Yu. He glared at the retreating back, miming a punch at the air.
Just wait.
One day, you’ll kneel and call me ‘President Su.’
Stepping into the sunlight, Su Yu felt disoriented.
Yesterday, I was the idle young master of the Su family. Today, I’m someone’s lackey.
And Ji Yanli took Mia to the dinner instead of him.
Was he that worried I’d humiliate him?
He dug his nails into his palm, cutting off the thought.
His phone buzzed—two short rings, a pause, then two more.
Only Shen Le, that idiot, used that obnoxious pattern.
"Su-ge! Off work? Come to Moonlight—let’s celebrate your first day!"
Shen Le’s voice was overly cheerful.
Exhausted, Su Yu almost declined—until:
"Song Yanchu’s here too."
His pulse spiked. Yanchu?
"Wait for me. I’m on my way."
Moonlight Bar was his old haunt, though Yanchu usually avoided the noise.
Why go today?
But it’d been weeks since he’d seen him. Su Yu rushed over, nodding at the familiar bouncer.
"Room 1004."
He paused at the door, smoothing his clothes.
Inside, only Shen Le and Lin Yanjun lounged amid strobe lights.
Su Yu’s smile died. "Where’s Yanchu?"
Shen Le scratched his head. "Uh… we invited him, but he bailed?"
"I’m leaving."
Lin Yanjun caught his arm. "C’mon, we helped you yesterday! One drink?"
Su Yu hesitated. These two had scrambled to support him when he was disowned.
With a sigh, he slumped onto the couch.
Fine. One drink.
