Ji Yanli's hand paused mid-air before he slowly withdrew it, letting it fall naturally to his side.
"Are you throwing a tantrum with me?"
Su Yu scoffed.
The way he said it—so condescending, yet paired with that deep, magnetic voice—almost made it sound like he was coaxing a child.
"Who am I to throw tantrums at you? You’re the lofty President Ji. What am I now? I don’t even have the privilege of being idle anymore."
"Su Yu."
The man’s voice dropped, simmering with restrained anger as he cut him off.
The tone sent a jolt through Su Yu’s chest.
What right did Ji Yanli have to be mad?
He wasn’t his father—why did he care what he did?
Ji Yanli reached out, gripping his chin and forcing him to meet his gaze. Su Yu found himself staring into those ink-dark eyes, swirling with something storm-like.
"No one gives you worth—you seize it yourself. But if you plan to stay like this forever, then I truly have nothing more to say to a spoiled young master like you."
[Stop fighting, stop fighting! Both of you are so stubborn it’s making MY fists clench.]
[Ji-ge, would it kill you to say, ‘Wife, I’m worried about you, I want to help you’?! JUST SAY IT, YOU STUBBORN MAN!]
[Gloomy Guy’s not wrong though. If Baby Su doesn’t stand on his own, his brother will destroy him later.]
[Sigh, but with that tone, no wonder wife can’t see Ji Yanli’s good intentions.]
The grip on his chin didn’t loosen, but Su Yu’s struggle stilled as he processed the comments.
Ji Yanli… wants to help him? Why?
As rivals, shouldn’t Ji Yanli be delighted if Su Yan kicked him out of the Su family, leaving him to rot in obscurity?
Why did he care whether he stood on his own or not?
"Ji Yanli, let go first."
Su Yu grabbed the man’s wrist, prying his fingers off his chin.
Right now, he had no money, no skills—he couldn’t afford to be picky.
And the comments had struck a nerve.
They were right. He couldn’t keep wallowing. No matter what, he had to climb up.
Ji Yanli’s breathing was heavy, his agitation still unsteady. His fingers found his prayer beads again, rolling them restlessly.
"Fine. I’ll be your assistant."
The man’s fingers stilled. He looked up, eyes locking onto Su Yu’s.
Under that gaze, Su Yu’s ears burned. "What? If you dare use work to torment me, I’m quitting."
Maybe it was his imagination, but the gloom in Ji Yanli’s eyes seemed to dissipate, replaced by something almost like… amusement.
"Then I’ll be in your care from now on, Assistant Su."
The words shouldn’t have pleased him, but they did. Su Yu turned on his heel, marching ahead.
"If you know it’s trouble, then keep up. Let’s sign the contract before you sneak in some loophole to cheat me out of pay."
Su Yu followed Ji Yanli back to his corporate office.
He recognized this place. Back when Ji Yanli first acquired this failing little company, Su Yu had laughed at him.
Originally, it was a small-scale renewable energy firm on the brink of collapse.
Then, at its most precarious moment, the Ji Group swooped in with a massive buyout and investment.
At the time, Ji Yanli had just taken over the family business and was far from stable. For him to splurge on a near-bankrupt venture? All the major families had waited for the joke to unfold.
Su Yu had heard about it too—overheard Su Yan and his father discussing it with glee.
He’d privately sneered: This unlucky bastard’s really an amateur. Don’t come crying to Gege when you lose everything.
But Ji Yanli never cried.
He succeeded.
That dying company not only revived under his hands—it became a pioneer in sustainable energy, securing overseas partnerships and dominating the market.
That was when Su Yu realized, no matter how much he hated to admit it:
Ji Yanli really was that good.
"Come in. Why are you standing there?"
Ji Yanli was already seated in the executive chair, spinning halfway to pull a file from the shelf.
Snapped out of his thoughts, Su Yu stepped inside.
The office was peak, Ji Yanli—minimalist, monochrome, and suffocatingly austere. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed the cityscape behind him, while the obsidian furnishings made the space feel like a sleek, expensive coffin.
"Sit."
Ji Yanli scribbled something on the document before sliding it toward him.
Deja vu.
Hadn’t he just done this with Shen Xingyan?
Su Yu plopped into the chair. "I’d have sat even if you didn’t say it."
Ji Yanli’s brow arched. "Glad to see Young Master Su’s attitude remains intact. Wouldn’t want rumors spreading that I’m bullying you."
[This contract was drafted THE MOMENT Ji-ge found out Su Yu got disowned. He just got beaten to the punch LOL.]
[I won’t tell baby that he slipped a sneaky clause on the third-to-last line of the third-to-last page.]
[What’s wrong with that? Ji-ge’s just rightfully protecting his interests.]
[What can we say? We toxic yanderes gotta yandere.]
Su Yu’s eyes glazed over at the mountainous stack of paperwork. Flipping through, it was all dry legalese—nothing worth scrutinizing. Not like he planned to follow the rules anyway.
But the comments gave him pause.
His pen hovered.
Maybe he should check.
As he started skimming backward, Ji Yanli’s gaze grew noticeably heavier. The man’s fingers drummed impatiently against the desk.
Something was definitely fishy.
Su Yu kept flipping until—there.
The third-to-last page. His eyes scanned downward, searching—
A large hand slapped over the text.
"The hell?"
Su Yu stared at the veined, slightly rough hand—not the pampered sort, though the fingers were elegantly tapered.
He tried to shove it aside, but Ji Yanli held firm, pressing down with quiet force.
"Ji Yanli, are you insane? You won’t even let me read my own contract? Trying to screw me over?"
For the first time, Ji Yanli looked… guilty.
His throat bobbed. "I didn’t say you couldn’t read it."
The hand lifted, revealing the hidden clause—deliberately shrunk to a font size smaller than the rest.
180. During the contract period, Party B shall not establish any intimate relationships, including but not limited to: marriage, engagement, romantic involvement, or arranged meetings with potential partners.
The absurdity of it made Su Yu blink. He read it twice, then slowly lifted his head.
"Ji Yanli," he said flatly.
"What the fuck is this?"
