Shen Xingyan was the first to lose patience.
Having played the role of an invisible bystander for so long,
he was still someone addressed respectfully as President Shen in the business world.
"President Ji, poaching someone right in front of their employer seems rather inappropriate."
Su Yu watched as the man across from him shifted his posture again, his gaze no longer fixed on him.
Ji Yanli's brows furrowed slightly, irritation flashing in his eyes at the interruption.
He turned his head just enough to glance at Shen Xingyan, his lips parting coldly:
"President Shen, after all these years in business, haven’t you learned one simple rule? If a competitor’s offer is better than yours, you should step aside gracefully."
The words were undeniably arrogant, but Su Yu knew they weren’t wrong.
Ji Yanli might be insufferable, but he’d single-handedly elevated the Ji family to a position no one else could rival.
"President Ji, let’s focus on the collaboration."
Shen Xingyan suppressed his frustration, forcing a polite smile as he slid the contract across the table.
This time, Ji Yanli didn’t nitpick.
He took the file, flipped through it lazily—whether he actually read it was anyone’s guess—and then tossed it back onto the table.
"I’m not satisfied with the proposal."
His voice was icy.
Shen Xingyan’s fingers tightened on his knees.
"Could you specify the issues? We can discuss revisions."
This deal was critical for the Shen family.
Shen Xingyan had prepared meticulously, knowing Ji Yanli wouldn’t agree easily—but he hadn’t expected such outright disdain.
"There’s nothing to discuss. This collaboration was never a necessity for me."
Ji Yanli’s fingers brushed over the sandalwood beads on his wrist, rolling them slowly.
"But now, President Shen does have something I want very much."
Shen Xingyan knew exactly what he meant. "I’m afraid I can’t concede on this."
"Really? If I recall correctly, the Ji Group is the only one capable of delivering on this project."
Su Yu listened in confusion, the exchange feeling like some cryptic negotiation.
Yet, a chill ran down his spine—as if he were the commodity being fought over.
Su Zhaofeng had never taught him any of this.
Business strategy? He barely knew how to navigate a shopping mall.
[Su Yu’s about to fall asleep lol.]
[HAHAHAHA wife’s so clueless, he doesn’t even realize they’re fighting over him.]
[So intense! Betting on Gloomy Guy to win! Ji Yanli’s hustled all these years just to spoil his wife!]
[Wife, don’t let our Ji-ge lose! He’s worked so hard for you T_T.]
Who are you calling dumb?!
Su Yu snapped back to attention.
Was his image really this bad?
Every comment either mocked his naivety or his incompetence.
Distracted by the barrage, he didn’t notice the weight of two gazes locking onto him—one scorching, the other piercing.
Ji Yanli chuckled lowly. "It seems Assistant Su has no objections to my proposal."
What proposal?!
Su Yu blinked, meeting those dark eyes. For a split second, they almost looked… tender.
Tender? Ji Yanli? Had he lost his mind?
Shen Xingyan spoke beside him: "Su Yu, do you agree?"
Agree to what?!
He’d zoned out for two seconds, and now it sounded like they were arranging his marriage!
"Should I… agree?" he hedged.
To Ji Yanli, he looked like a dazed rabbit—dozing peacefully one moment, then abruptly hauled onto a scale to be weighed, blinking up innocently: "Customer, would you like me braised or steamed?"
"Since Assistant Su has no objections—President Shen, pleasure doing business."
Ji Yanli leaned back, arms draped over the chair, his smile victorious.
Shen Xingyan, however, looked like he’d swallowed glass.
His jaw clenched as he forced out:
"President Ji. Pleasure."
What business?!
Su Yu watched Shen Xingyan stand, snatch the files, and stride toward the door.
As an assistant, professionalism demanded he follow.
He grabbed his phone and hurried after—
"Su Yu."
A voice, cool and measured, stopped him mid-step.
"Where do you think you’re going?"
[BABY! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! WHY ARE YOU FOLLOWING THAT OTHER MAN?!]
[Turn around and look at Ji Yanli! Don’t tell me you feel NOTHING!]
[Ji-ge lost so much money to get you, and you’re just leaving?! He’s gonna SHATTER.]
Su Yu froze. "Got him"?
To whose side? Ji Yanli’s?
He turned slowly.
Ji Yanli still sat in his chair, but his expression had darkened, the earlier smugness replaced by something far more dangerous.
The prayer beads were back in his hands, rolling between his fingers.
"Su Yu, you’re my assistant now. Are you really abandoning your current employer for your old one?"
"Since when was I your assistant?!"
Ji Yanli stood, closing the distance between them in a few strides.
He loomed over Su Yu, his presence overwhelming.
"Just now. You didn’t object."
Su Yu stepped back. "Who said I didn’t?! I do object! I’d rather beg on the streets than work for you!"
The idea was laughable. Becoming his love rival’s assistant?
Never.
If Song Yanchu ever found out, where would his dignity be?
Even without that complication, he’d never survive under Ji Yanli. They’d always been oil and water—he’d be tortured to death within a week.
"Su Yu."
Ji Yanli’s voice dropped, the beads slipping back onto his wrist. He reached out, fingers brushing Su Yu’s temple before trailing down to his earlobe, pinching it lightly.
"You still don’t understand your situation, do you?"
The touch burned, but his words were frigid:
"Su Zhaofeng cut you off. The Su family has discarded you. Do you really plan to stay a worthless waste forever?"
The truth stabbed deeper than any blade.
Yes. Su Yu was no longer the idle young master.
Without the Su name, without money—he was nothing.
But how did Ji Yanli know? Had he been waiting for this?
Su Yu jerked his head away. "You must be thrilled to see me like this."
He remembered their last encounter at a mall months ago.
He’d been with a minor celebrity, laughing carelessly—until Ji Yanli passed by, his gaze dripping with contempt, as if Su Yu were trash.
He’d nearly thrown a punch then, restrained only by public decorum.
Instead, he’d flipped Ji Yanli off: "The hell are you looking at?"
And Ji Yanli’s reply still echoed in his ears:
"Su Yu. You’re pathetic."
