Chapter 42 The Joke That Was Meant for Him

The revelation of Qin Cheng Yu’s identity gave Chu He Jun pause.

If word got out to the elders that he was frequently dining with someone from the Qin family,

he’d undoubtedly face endless nagging.

Maintaining a polite façade, Chu He Jun addressed Qin Cheng Yu,

“Second Young Master Qin, there’s an empty seat over there. Would you mind sitting there instead?”

Hearing this, Ye Kang’s lips curled into a smug smile.

However, Qin Cheng Yu remained unfazed, continuing to eat his meal without acknowledging Chu He Jun’s words.

Sensing the rising tension, Ning Liang An interjected,

“Young Master Chu, it’s fine. I can sit elsewhere.”

Chu He Jun waved him off.

“You sit tight. Don’t move.”

Suddenly, Nian Jin Sui slammed his chopsticks down with a sharp clack

furrowing his brows as he snapped at Chu He Jun.

“Chu He Jun, I’ve been tolerating you for way too long! We’re not even friends, so what gives you the right to boss people around in front of me?”

Chu He Jun shot back,

“Nian Jin Sui, aren’t you in love with my brother? How dare you cozy up to the Qin family and disregard the Chu family!”

“My brother?”

Nian Jin Sui’s anger flared, and he raised his voice.

“Your brother, in my eyes, is nothing but a—”

Nian Jin Sui froze mid-sentence. The entire cafeteria seemed to hold its breath, all eyes fixed on him.

Clenching his teeth, he pivoted, delivering an over-the-top monologue:

“Your brother, in my heart, is like a god! Ah, he’s broad-minded, discerning, magnanimous, and worthy of every beautiful word in the dictionary. When he smiles, even the roses of Bulgaria and the spring waters of the Seine pale in comparison. My love for him is like the ceaseless waves of a mighty river, enough to fill the Great Rift Valley! How could he possibly misunderstand me over such a trivial matter?”

The cafeteria fell silent.

Everyone suddenly found their appetite diminishing.

Qin Cheng Yu lowered his gaze.

Nian Jin Sui is acting crazy again.

Even Chu He Jun looked nauseated.

“Nian Jin Sui, you’re officially my brother’s number-one brainless fan.”

But Nian Jin Sui wasn’t about to let this slide.

He had had enough of Chu He Jun strutting around and calling the shots lately.

Initially, he didn’t mind Chu He Jun’s antics, especially when they were directed at Ye Kang, who deserved to have his ego deflated.

But now that Chu He Jun was turning his attention toward Qin Cheng Yu, Nian Jin Sui’s protective instincts kicked in.

“Listen up, Chu He Jun,”

Nian Jin Sui said firmly,

“Stop ordering people around in front of me. I won’t stand for it anymore!”

“Nian Jin Sui, you—”

Chu He Jun glared at him, his eyes practically spitting fire.

The onlookers were stunned.

The heirs of the Nian and Chu families, quarreling in public over something as trivial as seating arrangements, was a spectacle unlike anything they’d seen before.

Ning Liang An, sensing the tension, tried to smooth things over,

but Ye Kang was quicker to act, attempting to curry favor with Chu He Jun.

“Second Young Master Chu, don’t get upset. Please take my seat instead. I’ll move somewhere else.”

But Chu He Jun didn’t even spare him a glance.

With a cold snort, he picked up his tray and moved to another table.

“Nian Jin Sui, don’t think I’m afraid of you. I just don’t feel like stooping to your level!”

Chu He Jun snapped.

Nian Jin Sui, surprised that the situation had defused so quickly,

figured that while Chu He Jun might have a temper, his nature wasn’t all bad.

The atmosphere at the table grew tense after the confrontation.

Ning Liang An, piecing together the events,

suspected that Chu He Jun had transferred to their school on Chu He Ting’s orders to protect him.

Feeling awkward, he quietly apologized to Nian Jin Sui.

“Young Master Nian, I’m sorry for causing you trouble.”

Nian Jin Sui noticed Ning Liang An’s genuine remorse and assured him,

“Don’t overthink it. This has nothing to do with you.”

Still sensing Ning Liang An’s unease, Nian Jin Sui decided to lighten the mood.

“Hey, Ning Liang An, here’s a question for you. If someone can’t see, they’re called blind. If they can’t hear, they’re deaf. If they can’t speak, they’re mute. But what do you call someone who can’t smell?”

Ning Liang An tilted his head, puzzled by the sudden riddle.

“Young Master Nian, I have no idea.”

Nian Jin Sui turned to Qin Cheng Yu.

“What do you think?”

Qin Cheng Yu answered flatly,

“A Beta.”

“Nope.”

Nian Jin Sui shook his head with a mischievous grin.

“They’re called a ‘silent nose.’”

Ning Liang An was confused.

“Why a ‘silent nose’?”

Nian Jin Sui beamed.

- “Because a silent nose is like... ‘囧囧囧!’ Get it? Haha!”

Qin Cheng Yu: ???

Thankfully, Ning Liang An and Ye Kang, being active on social media,

caught the joke and chuckled along.

“Where’d you hear such a funny joke, Young Master Nian?”

Ning Liang An asked.

“Online, of course.”

Nian Jin Sui was pleased with the response,

enjoying the satisfaction of being understood—a stark contrast to Qin Cheng Yu,

whose deadpan reactions always killed the vibe.

Qin Cheng Yu remained expressionless, though his gaze darkened slightly.

That joke had been meant for him.

Nian Jin Sui had even promised to tell him a funnier joke.

But now, Nian Jin Sui had shared that joke with Ning Liang An instead.

Even if Qin Cheng Yu didn’t fully understand what was so funny,

he couldn’t shake the irritation bubbling inside.

Watching Nian Jin Sui and Ning Liang An laugh together felt inexplicably jarring.

Nian Jin Sui seems to like Ning Liang An more.

Of course, why wouldn’t he? Qin Cheng Yu was reserved, withdrawn, and not at all likable.

Compared to the sunny and endearing Ning Liang An, it was no surprise who Nian Jin Sui preferred.

That joke...

Qin Cheng Yu clenched his fists under the table.

That joke was supposed to be mine.
