Chapter 40 Should I Jump Again?

Although Nian Jin Sui had money now, spending a million on such an ugly painting felt like a punch to his chest.

It’s fine to buy expensive things, but not overpriced ones!

Seeing Nian Jin Sui in a sour mood, Butler Liu quickly ordered the painting to be stored away in the collection room.

But that wasn’t the only thing spoiling Nian Jin Sui’s day.

[System Notification: Host, your monthly harm assessment score for Qin Cheng Yu is only 30 points, far below the passing grade.]

Nian Jin Sui was taken aback.

“When did this harm assessment come into play? I don’t remember this being mentioned!”

[Following system evaluation, the current storyline risks deviating from the original novel's character arc, where Qin Cheng Yu's dark, obsessive personality was pivotal. To rectify this, the system has introduced a monthly harm evaluation. Specifics of these assessments were not detailed in the original novel, so the method of harm is at your discretion. Scores will now be calculated based on your actions.]

Nian Jin Sui was indignant.

“Xilu, do you even have a shred of humanity? Are you bent on ensuring Qin Cheng Yu’s destruction as in the novel?”

[Self-check complete. This system contains no elements of humanity.]

Nian Jin Sui: …

He sighed, his voice low and restrained.

“And if I refuse to comply?”

[Failure to meet monthly targets will result in the loss of your system privileges.]

As expected. Nian Jin Sui chuckled bitterly.

“You really only know how to threaten me.”

If this condition had been clear from the start, Nian Jin Sui might have walked away without hesitation.

No amount of self-preservation was worth tormenting another person.

But now, after nearly two months in this world, Nian Jin Sui had grown attached to this second chance at life.

He had started to believe in Qin Cheng Yu’s words:

"Fate is written through one’s actions."

Just as he thought he could write his own story, the system struck him with this harsh reality.

[Don’t despair, Host. The system aims to control variables, not eliminate them.]

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

[The system only requires you to meet the passing score, not achieve full marks. This month, for example, your harm score is 30 points: 20 for physical harm and 10 for psychological harm.]

Nian Jin Sui was perplexed.

“Wait, I treated Qin Cheng Yu so well! How does this count as harm?”

He paused and hesitantly asked,

“Does him carrying me count as harm?”

[Indeed. Any physical labor Qin Cheng Yu performs for you—such as carrying you, pushing your wheelchair, or rescuing you—contributes to physical harm scores. For example, his actions in the pool and assisting you with mobility.]

“Well, great timing, since I’m getting my cast off tomorrow…”

Nian Jin Sui lamented before adding,

“What about psychological harm?”

[Any negative emotions Qin Cheng Yu experiences—anger, sadness, jealousy, anxiety—due to your actions count as psychological harm.]

Nian Jin Sui was outraged.

“I wasn’t even mean to him this month! That sneaky brat must be cursing me in his heart!”

[Because this rule wasn’t disclosed earlier, no penalty will be applied this month. Additionally, future notifications will remind you to meet targets promptly.]

Nian Jin Sui gritted his teeth.

“Thank you so much.”

[You’re welcome.]

The next day, after getting his cast removed at the hospital,

Nian Jin Sui was able to ditch the heavy plaster in favor of a sleek black ankle brace.

A full recovery—and running around—was just weeks away.

But his mood was far from cheerful.

“Once I’m fully healed, I can’t have Qin Cheng Yu carry or push me anymore. How will I meet my targets then?”

“Should I… jump again?”

At lunchtime, Nian Jin Sui invited Ning Liang An to eat in the cafeteria.

“Last week you treated me, so let me treat you this time. It’s just cafeteria food, though—hope you don’t mind,”

Ning Liang An offered sincerely.

Having endured Ye Kang’s freeloading antics,

Nian Jin Sui appreciated Ning Liang An’s honesty even more.

“I like cafeteria food too. Thanks!”

As Ning Liang An went to get food, Ye Kang leaned over, puzzled.

“Young master Nian, why are you suddenly so nice to Ning Liang An? Did you forget he’s trying to steal Chu Shao from you?”

Nian Jin Sui raised an eyebrow.

“Do I look like I’m being nice to him?”

Ye Kang, unsure of his angle, nodded.

“You’re chatting and eating together. Everyone thinks you’re close.”

Perfect,

Nian Jin Sui thought.

If even Ye Kang could notice, others probably had too.

No one would dare bully Ning Liang An now.

“Stop talking and go get food,”

Nian Jin Sui ordered.

Shortly after, Ning Liang An returned with two trays, and the four sat down together.

But as Ning Liang An was about to sit, Ye Kang sneered,

“Ning Liang An, weren’t you always standing while serving us? Since when do you think you can sit with us?”

Annoyed, Nian Jin Sui snapped,

“Ye Kang, if you’re not here to eat, get lost!”

Just then, a new voice chimed in.

“Quite the temper, Young master Nian. Still as obnoxious as when you were a kid, I see.”

Nian Jin Sui looked up to see a sharp-featured young man with chestnut hair and pale skin standing beside him.

“Who are you?”

Nian Jin Sui asked impatiently.

“You don’t remember me? I’m Chu He Jun.”

Recognition dawned.

Chu He Jun, Chu He Ting’s cousin, an Alpha with mixed heritage due to his American mother.

He had been a childhood rival of Nian Jin Sui, both vying to be Chu He Ting’s closest confidant.

Now, back from his music studies abroad, he was an internationally acclaimed pianist.

In the novel, Chu He Jun was tasked by Chu He Ting to protect Ning Liang An at the academy.

Over time, he developed feelings for Ning Liang An, becoming another deeply devoted supporting character.
