Chapter 36 The Overwhelming Power of the Plot

Unlike the protagonist,

Chu He Ting, who consistently topped his class and was a celebrated figure at the academy,

Qin Cheng Yu—despite being a supervillain on par with the protagonist—

was unlikely to lag behind in academic performance.

Unless… Qin Cheng Yu was deliberately holding back.

But Nian Jin Sui couldn’t understand why.

Qin Cheng Yu had such a difficult position in the Qin family.

If he had showcased his abilities early on,

wouldn’t his life at the Qin household have been much easier?

Noticing Nian Jin Sui’s silence,

Qin Cheng Yu turned to him, his sharp intuition quickly picking up on his thoughts.

“Young Master Nian, what do you want to ask?”

Nian Jin Sui hesitated before blurting out,

“Um… does your grandfather know how talented you are?”

Qin Cheng Yu’s eyelids lowered slightly, his long lashes casting a faint shadow beneath his eyes.

For a brief moment, Nian Jin Sui thought he saw the small mole on Qin Cheng Yu’s right eyelid tremble, as if a painful memory had resurfaced.

But when Qin Cheng Yu looked back at him, his gaze was clear and cold as ever.

“In his eyes, only Alphas are worthy of being called ‘talented.’”

Nian Jin Sui was stunned.

He remembered the novel’s depiction of Qin Zhuo’s obsession with having an Alpha heir.

Just as some people in reality favor sons over daughters,

there were those who valued Alphas far more than Betas.

He couldn’t help but imagine a younger Qin Cheng Yu holding out his report card,

hoping for Qin Zhuo’s approval, longing for attention, recognition, and praise.

Yet, after so many years in the Qin family,

Qin Cheng Yu must have watched his initial hopes slowly turn into despair.

Despite the bustling noise around him,

it was as if Qin Cheng Yu had been living in a vast void of emptiness and desolation.

Nian Jin Sui wondered if, in the novel, Qin Zhuo ever felt regret or guilt in his later years,

watching his commercial empire crumble at the hands of Qin Cheng Yu.

The more Nian Jin Sui thought about it, the angrier he got.

“That old geezer doesn’t know anything! Qin Cheng Yu, listen to me—you’re amazing! Super talented! Absolutely incredible!”

He even gave two enthusiastic thumbs-up to emphasize his point.

Qin Cheng Yu stared at Nian Jin Sui. For once,

he clearly saw genuine affirmation in someone’s eyes, along with… pity.

Normally, he despised pity.

Most people’s pity was condescending and detached, entirely meaningless.

It was like being a helpless, drowning person,

surrounded by onlookers who did nothing but watch as he sank deeper.

But Nian Jin Sui’s pity didn’t make him feel that way.

Qin Cheng Yu found himself entertaining an absurd thought:

Maybe I should show more of my scars to win more of Nian Jin Sui’s pity.

Nian Jin Sui couldn’t deny how reassuring it was to have Qin Cheng Yu around.

He was perceptive, hardworking, and endlessly reliable.

Perhaps his prior experience caring for Qin Cheng Lu’s broken leg made him particularly adept at looking after Nian Jin Sui now.

Every time they encountered stairs,

Qin Cheng Yu would instinctively crouch in front of him,

ready to carry him without needing to be asked.

But this dynamic inevitably led to gossip.

No one thought much of someone like Ye Kang,

who came from a minor family, clinging to Nian Jin Sui.

Qin Cheng Yu, however, was different.

Even though he was neglected in the Qin family, he was still their second young master.

His willingness to serve Nian Jin Sui so diligently raised eyebrows.

Though Qin Cheng Yu didn’t seem to mind, Ye Kang was growing restless.

Despite maintaining a friendship with Nian Jin Sui,

Ye Kang could feel the distance between them growing.

Meanwhile, Qin Cheng Yu seemed to be gaining Nian Jin Sui’s favor more and more.

Determined to reclaim his position, Ye Kang came up with an idea.

Now that Ning Liang An had transferred to the academy, he could target him.

To Nian Jin Sui, Ning Liang An was a thorn in his side.

If Ye Kang took care of Ning Liang An, surely he could win back Nian Jin Sui’s favor.

Plus, Ye Kang still had a score to settle with Ning Liang An.

It was time for Ning Liang An to experience the "warmth" of the Imperial Capital Business Academy.

In the cafeteria one day, Ye Kang and Qin Cheng Yu went to line up for food,

leaving Nian Jin Sui seated alone at the table.

He remembered that, in the original novel, once Ning Liang An transferred,

Nian Jin Sui and Ye Kang had led the charge in ostracizing him, even rallying other classmates to bully him.

But nearly two weeks into the semester, the system hadn’t assigned him any such task.

This both puzzled and relieved Nian Jin Sui.

If I don’t have to be the bad guy, I’m perfectly happy with that.

Just then, a commotion caught his attention.

He turned to see Ning Liang An sitting not far away, his hair and clothes covered in food.

It looked like someone had dumped their lunch on him.

When Nian Jin Sui spotted Ye Kang standing nearby, looking smug, everything clicked.

Ye Kang’s face showed no remorse.

In fact, he gave Nian Jin Sui a triumphant wink, as if seeking praise.

A cold shiver ran down Nian Jin Sui’s spine.

He knew from the novel that Ning Liang An suffered relentless bullying at the academy.

Yet, deep down, he had hoped things might be different.

After all, he wasn’t the same Nian Jin Sui who found joy in tormenting others.

If the system ever tasked him with such acts, he intended to find loopholes,

just as he had with Qin Cheng Yu—ensuring minimal harm while avoiding punishment himself.

And besides, two weeks had passed without any missions.

But now, Nian Jin Sui realized the truth:

even if he did nothing, even if he never laid a hand on Ning Liang An,

the actions of people like Ye Kang and others would ultimately reflect on him.

At Imperial Capital Business Academy,

students followed the lead of the heirs to the Qin, Chu, and Nian families.

With Chu He Ting graduated and Qin Cheng Lu mostly absent in his senior year,

Nian Jin Sui stood alone at the top.

And everyone knew Ning Liang An was his rival in love.

It wasn’t hard to guess Ning Liang An’s social standing in the academy.

Which meant that, without Nian Jin Sui even realizing it,

Ning Liang An had likely already endured a great deal of bullying.

Nian Jin Sui found himself in a deeply awkward position.

He didn’t want to bully Ning Liang An.

But by doing nothing, he had become an accomplice—or even the assumed mastermind.

For the first time, Nian Jin Sui felt the overwhelming power of the plot.
