"Let’s Be Together"
Seeing that Qin Zhiyan ignored her, Ning Muxi tried to lighten the mood with a forced laugh. "Assistant Tang is a grown man, after all. It’s not like he’s afraid of the dark, right?"
What should have been a harmless joke instead acted like a spark to a fuse, instantly detonating the explosive rage in Qin Zhiyan’s heart.
He whipped around, veins bulging in his neck, eyes bloodshot—like a furious beast pushed to its limit. His glare pinned Ning Muxi in place as he suppressed his wrath through gritted teeth, spitting out a single word:
"Leave."
Ning Muxi had never seen Qin Zhiyan like this. She stumbled back, face pale, unable to utter another word.
"President Qin! The elevator doors are open!"
Qin Zhiyan lunged forward, shoving everyone aside before dropping to his knees. He pressed close to the narrow gap in the doors and shouted, "Tang Keyi! Tang Keyi! Can you hear me? Tie the rope around your waist—we’ll pull you up!"
But there was no response.
Refusing to wait any longer, Qin Zhiyan tore off his jacket and tossed it aside. He fastened the rescue rope around his own waist and moved to crawl inside—only to be stopped.
"President Qin, you can’t go in there! It’s too dangerous! If something happens, you’ll be trapped too!"
Qin Zhiyan’s mind was made up. "Move."
No one dared disobey. They could only tighten the rope around him and watch helplessly as he squeezed into the elevator.
Carefully lowering himself inside, Qin Zhiyan immediately spotted Tang Keyi curled in the corner, knees hugged to his chest, illuminated by the dim light from above.
"Tang Keyi! Are you hurt?"
His hand brushed Tang Keyi’s cheek—and came away wet.
Heart wrenching, Qin Zhiyan pulled Tang Keyi into his arms.
This time was worse than before. Tang Keyi trembled violently, his entire body drenched in cold sweat.
Remembering the psychologist’s advice—provide physical contact and verbal reassurance to help the patient feel safe—Qin Zhiyan tightened his hold.
"Tang Keyi… Keyi… It’s okay. You’re safe. I’m here. I’m here."
He repeated the words like a mantra as he untied the rope from himself and secured it around Tang Keyi instead. Then, lifting Tang Keyi’s limp body, he pushed him upward through the gap.
The team outside pulled in unison, quickly hauling Tang Keyi to safety.
Qin Zhiyan caught the rope when it was tossed back down, fastened it around himself, and climbed out.
Cong Qiao helped Tang Keyi sit while Qin Zhiyan scooped him up again and headed straight for the stairwell.
Ning Muxi watched their retreating figures, finally snapping out of her daze.
Tang Keyi had been right.
They were in love.
Thankfully, the CEO’s office was only four floors up. Qin Zhiyan carried Tang Keyi into the private restroom and followed the psychologist’s instructions—settling him into the soft bedding, playing gentle instrumental music, then climbing in beside him to hold him close.
"Keyi… Keyi… It’s over. You’re safe."
He murmured the words into Tang Keyi’s ear, one hand rubbing soothing circles on his back.
Qin Zhiyan’s heart ached as he studied Tang Keyi’s face—so similar to the boy in that photo.
Perhaps because he’d been trapped alone in the dark for too long, Tang Keyi remained unresponsive for what felt like an eternity. Qin Zhiyan’s voice grew hoarse, but Tang Keyi still hadn’t relaxed, his body tense with lingering fear.
Growing desperate, Qin Zhiyan considered taking him to the hospital.
"Keyi, please… Don’t scare me like this."
He pressed Tang Keyi’s trembling hand against his own chest. "Feel me. I’m right here."
Through the fabric of his shirt, Tang Keyi’s icy palm registered the steady, if slightly rapid, beat of Qin Zhiyan’s heart.
[…Qin… Qin Zhiyan…]
Relief flooded Qin Zhiyan. Tang Keyi was finally responding—even if only in his thoughts.
"Tang Keyi, can you say something to me?"
He searched Tang Keyi’s eyes, relieved to see a flicker of awareness returning.
These eyes shouldn’t look like this.
They should be sparkling with laughter, bright as the Milky Way.
If Tang Keyi was a gift from heaven, then Qin Zhiyan would be the one to guard this piece of the cosmos.
Tang Keyi stared at the face so close to his—those usually cold, sharp features now etched with worry.
He could feel how much Qin Zhiyan cared.
"Qin Zhiyan." His voice was barely a whisper.
Qin Zhiyan froze—then laughed softly.
"Mn. I’m here."
He buried his face in Tang Keyi’s shoulder, holding him tighter.
Slowly, Tang Keyi’s thoughts began to clear.
[Qin Zhiyan’s smile just now… so beautiful.]
[What are we now?]
[He didn’t even explain, just hugged me out of nowhere…]
Seeing the real Tang Keyi return, Qin Zhiyan’s panic finally eased.
His lips brushed Tang Keyi’s ear as he whispered, "Tang Keyi, let’s be together."
[What?!]
[He—he—he just confessed!]
[What do I do now?]
[If I say yes right away, will I seem too eager?]
[Should I pretend to hesitate?]
[But if I hesitate too much, will he think I’m being dramatic? I did play the role of his admirer…]
Qin Zhiyan didn’t give him time to overthink. Lifting his head, he met Tang Keyi’s gaze. "If you don’t answer, I’ll take it as a yes."
[…Then I just won’t say anything…]
Amusement glinted in Qin Zhiyan’s eyes. "Tang Keyi, are you secretly celebrating inside? After liking me for so long, you’ve finally won me over."
[…If I tell him I lied before, will he break up with me on the spot?]
[Better keep that to myself. Let him keep his little fantasy.]
[…Ugh. I feel like such a scumbag.]
Playing oblivious to Tang Keyi’s inner turmoil, Qin Zhiyan asked gently, "Are you still feeling unwell?"
"I’m fine. Just… sweaty. Sticky." Tang Keyi sat up, wiping his neck.
[It’s just a hug! Why is your heart still racing? Have some dignity, Tang Keyi!]
The empty space in his arms left Qin Zhiyan strangely bereft.
