SDS: Chapter 24

 The CEO’s Birthday

Tang Keyi replied casually,

“For my grandmother.”

The manager was stunned.

He had assumed Tang Keyi wanted something cheap to fob off some unimportant person—

never did he expect it would be for the esteemed Madam Tang!

Has the Tang family gone bankrupt?

A mix of emotions flooded the manager,

but seeing Tang Keyi calmly browsing without a trace of embarrassment,

he couldn’t be sure.

“Which one do you think my grandma would like?”

Tang Keyi asked, turning to the manager.

How am I supposed to answer that?

Beads of sweat formed on the manager’s forehead as he forced out an awkward reply:

“I think… the thought matters most. Madam Tang dotes on you so much—she’d love anything you give her.”

The diplomatic answer aligned perfectly with Tang Keyi’s own thoughts.

Tang Keyi smiled, his gaze landing on a pair of earrings priced just over 10,000.

Their design? A tiny piece of candy.

His eyes lit up.

“These are adorable. Grandma will think of me the moment she sees them.”

The manager swiftly retrieved the earrings.

Though Madam Tang was elderly, she had the spirit of a mischievous child.

Tang Keyi was certain she’d love them.

But the price slightly exceeded his budget…

Footsteps approached from behind, but Tang Keyi paid no mind,

assuming it was just another customer.

“Any chance of a discount?” he ventured.

The manager’s eye twitched.

“Apologies, Young Master Tang. Our prices are fixed.”

Could Tang Keyi really not spare a few extra thousand now?

“Seriously, Tang Keyi? Haggling over 10,000 yuan? Did your family go broke or something?”

The voice—mocking and unmistakable—belonged to Li Mingxing.

Tang Keyi shot him an irritated glare.

“Frugality and hard work are the empire’s traditional virtues. Ever heard of them? Your mindset is so underdeveloped.”

Li Mingxing had been shopping nearby when he spotted Tang Keyi through the window.

Naturally, he couldn’t resist stirring trouble.

Clicking his tongue, Li Mingxing feigned amazement—

though he didn’t actually believe the Tangs were bankrupt.

If they were, rumors would’ve spread like wildfire.

Ignoring him, Tang Keyi doubled down on the manager.

“Aren’t I a member here? No member discounts? And after all my past purchases—no loyalty points? Can’t I redeem some of the cost?”

Li Mingxing’s jaw dropped.

Tang Keyi is resorting to points now?!

Though baffled by Tang Keyi’s sudden penny-pinching,

Li Mingxing felt an odd pang of sympathy.

Grudgingly, he offered,

“Enough. I’ll pay for the earrings.”

“Who asked you to?”

Tang Keyi snapped, then urged the manager,

“Just check my points already!”

The manager, unused to wealthy heirs scrimping over points,

hurriedly pulled up Tang Keyi’s account—which, unsurprisingly, was top-tier.

“Isn’t Singles’ Day coming up? No promotions?”

Tang Keyi pressed, leaving no bargaining stone unturned.

“Tang Keyi! Have you no shame? You’re a Tang!”

Li Mingxing hissed, so mortified he nearly clapped a hand over Tang Keyi’s mouth.

“What’s shameful about it? Since when can’t Tangs haggle?”

Tang Keyi shrugged.

Wiping his brow, the manager applied every possible discount before delivering the final price.

“Young Master Tang, this is the absolute lowest.”

Satisfied (and with nearly 1,000 yuan left from his paycheck),

Tang Keyi handed over his card with the flourish of someone splurging millions.

“Wrap them up.”

As the transaction processed, his phone rang—Han Qiuqiu.

“Keyi, which club did you book?”

“Was just about to tell you. Imperial Night, Room 803. See you later.”

“Tomorrow’s the weekend—we’re partying all night, right?”

“Obviously. Tonight’s my treat!”

Before Tang Keyi could hang up, Li Mingxing exploded:

“You pinch pennies over earrings but splurge on Imperial Night?! One night there costs ten times these earrings!”

Collecting his purchase, Tang Keyi smirked.

“My money, my rules. Got a problem?”

“You—! And here I was, offering to pay!”

Li Mingxing fumed.

“You were just messing with me!”

In too good a mood to argue, Tang Keyi even found Li Mingxing tolerable today.

You barged in while I was shopping. Not my fault. Wanna join us tonight?”

Li Mingxing turned away with a huff.

“Don’t act all chummy. I’m not falling for it!”

“Suit yourself. Qiuqiu’s waiting.”

With a breezy wave, Tang Keyi strolled out.

“…At least ask twice if you’re inviting someone,”

Li Mingxing muttered at his retreating figure.

The next day,

Madam Tang was moved to tears upon receiving the gift,

clutching Tang Keyi’s hand while praising his thoughtfulness.

She promptly uploaded a nine-grid selfie spree on social media,

showcasing the earrings with the caption:

“Our Keyi has truly grown up—using his first paycheck to buy his grandma a gift. So precious.”

Then, she admired herself in the mirror, counting the likes rolling in.

At the company cafeteria, Tang Keyi was mid-bite when Qin Yilin plopped down beside him.

“What’d you get for Zhiyan today?”

“Get him what?”

Tang Keyi blinked.

Qin Yilin stared.

“…A birthday gift? Don’t tell me you didn’t know it’s his birthday?”

Today’s Qin Zhiyan’s birthday?!

Who memorizes that?

Wait, so he’s a Scorpio?

Explains the toxicity.

Whatever.

Not like I have to get him anything.

Qin Yilin squinted.

“You’re obsessed with him but didn’t know his birthday?”

Tang Keyi’s stomach dropped.

“O-of course I knew! I’ve had a gift ready for ages…”

“What is it? Show me.”

“No peeking! It’s a secret!”

A gift?

…Does air count?
