Qin Chengyu looked puzzled.
"But wasn’t it the same when you attended Chu Corporation’s celebration banquet before?"
Nian Jinsui was stumped.
Of course it was different—that was for a mission!
But how was he supposed to explain that?!
Seeing Nian Jinsui at a loss for words, Qin Chengyu’s expression darkened.
"Is it because the last event was Chu Heting’s banquet that you dressed up so elaborately?"
Nian Jinsui hurriedly explained:
"But Brother Heting will be at this auction too! I just want to keep a low profile this time!"
"Oh?"
Qin Chengyu raised an eyebrow.
"So the reason you’re so eager to go this time is to see Chu Heting?"
Nian Jinsui: ???
"No!"
Nian Jinsui roared in frustration.
"Qin Chengyu, can’t you just trust me for once?!"
"I do trust you, I do. Don’t get worked up, Suisui."
Qin Chengyu quickly soothed him, though inwardly, he thought—
It doesn’t matter. I’ll be going too.
What can Chu Heting possibly do in front of me?
"Anyway, there’ll be so many people at the auction, and Liang’an will be there too. You don’t need to worry."
"I’m not worried. I’ll be watching closely."
"Huh?"
Nian Jinsui belatedly processed his words.
"You’re going too?"
Qin Chengyu’s sharp gaze swept over him.
"So Suisui was planning to go alone this whole time?"
A chill ran down Nian Jinsui’s spine as he sensed the danger.
While others play Minesweeper,
I’m out here stepping on landmines, huh?
He quickly forced a smile.
"Of course we’re going together! But… I have a little idea, Chengyu. How about we go in cosplay?"
"Cosplay as what?"
Nian Jinsui grinned. "Beggars."
Qin Chengyu: "..."
Naturally,
Qin Chengyu didn’t agree to Nian Jinsui’s absurd suggestion of dressing as beggars.
In the end, the two made a dazzling appearance at the charity auction.
After a week of professional grooming, Nian Jinsui—already renowned in the capital for his looks—was even more radiant than usual, drawing everyone’s attention the moment he stepped in.
And now that Qin Chengyu was no longer the same person he once was, his status as the head of the Qin Corporation made him a focal point wherever he went.
Add to that the fact that both Qin Chengyu and Nian Jinsui had been hot topics in the capital recently, and it was no surprise that the entire room’s attention instantly zeroed in on them.
Ning Liang’an spotted Nian Jinsui right away and eagerly dragged Chu Heting over.
"Jinsui! You actually listened to me! You look amazing today—anyone can see how happy you are!"
"Liang’an, you look great too."
Nian Jinsui felt a little guilty.
According to the novel’s plot, today should have been Ning Liang’an’s time to shine.
But for some reason, Qin Chengyu had gone all out—custom-tailored suits, private stylists—their outfits were so polished they could’ve walked straight onto a red carpet without looking out of place.
Qin Chengyu’s eyes lingered on Ning Liang’an’s hand gripping Nian Jinsui’s arm, the sight irritating him more by the second.
Without hesitation, he wedged himself between them, taking Nian Jinsui’s hand and pulling him forward.
"Suisui, let’s find our seats."
Ning Liang’an glared at Qin Chengyu’s retreating back.
"That guy—always hogging Jinsui!"
Chu Heting wrapped an arm around Ning Liang’an’s waist, soothing him.
"He’s hogging Jinsui, and I’m hogging you. Isn’t that fair?"
Ning Liang’an brightened.
"Then let’s hurry—I want to sit next to Jinsui!"
"Sure."
Chu Heting agreed, secretly relieved that Qin Chengyu was acting as his shield—otherwise, he’d be the one getting scolded.
Meanwhile, Qin Chengyu interlaced his fingers with Nian Jinsui’s, leaning in to whisper,
"Suisui, what did Ning Liang’an say to you? I want to know too."
Still annoyed at Qin Chengyu for making his mission harder, Nian Jinsui huffed,
"Not telling you."
"I already know anyway."
Qin Chengyu was far too sharp.
From Ning Liang’an’s few words, he could guess the gist—it was probably related to the recent rumors.
Hearing this, Nian Jinsui studied Qin Chengyu’s expression and immediately understood.
If even Ning Liang’an had heard the gossip, it must’ve already spread throughout the capital.
Of course Qin Chengyu knew.
No wonder he’d taken this auction so seriously—insisting on formal attire, sticking close, whispering affectionately—all to show everyone how well they got along.
The charity auction was packed with elites from all walks of life.
As the head of the Qin Corporation, Qin Chengyu naturally drew a crowd the moment he appeared, with countless people coming over to greet him.
And each time, Qin Chengyu would introduce Nian Jinsui: "This is my wife."
Watching Qin Chengyu navigate the social scene with effortless charm, Nian Jinsui couldn’t help but think—He really is something.
But...
My mission is doomed.
Qin Chengyu was the head of the Qin Corporation, while Chu Heting was still only the heir to the Chu family, not yet its official leader.
In terms of status, Chu Heting was slightly overshadowed.
Add to that the fact that Nian Jinsui and Qin Chengyu were married, while Chu Heting and Ning Liang’an were still just dating, and it was clear which couple drew more attention.
On top of that, Nian Jinsui had been the subject of recent rumors, making him an even bigger focal point.
And now, with Qin Chengyu deliberately flaunting their relationship to dispel the gossip, their presence became impossible to ignore.
As a result, nearly all eyes were on Qin Chengyu and Nian Jinsui.
Nian Jinsui wanted to cry.
I’m here to be the foil, not steal the spotlight!
But it wasn’t over yet. Nian Jinsui steeled himself.
If Chu Heting wins the final auction item for Ning Liang’an like in the novel,
there’s still a chance to turn things around!
Meanwhile, Ning Liang’an—who should’ve been the center of attention—wasn’t the least bit bothered by the shift in focus. If anything, he was thrilled.
"Jinsui, after today, let’s see who dares to gossip about you again."
Sitting beside Nian Jinsui, his tone was fiercely protective.
Nian Jinsui chuckled helplessly.
"Liang’an, never mind them. If you see anything you like later, just tell me—I’ll buy it for you."
"I’m not really interested in these things. But Dad mentioned you used to love collecting antiques and treasures. If you spot something you like, let me know—I’ll get it for you. Father gave me a huge allowance, and I don’t even know how to spend it all."
"That was before. I’m not really into that stuff anymore."
As Nian Jinsui and Ning Liang’an chatted animatedly, the two men seated beside them—Qin Chengyu and Chu Heting—exchanged a glance filled with identical displeasure.
Qin Chengyu: Control your person.
Chu Heting: You first.
