Spotting Chu Hejun in his performance attire, his face full of worry, Nian Jinsui quickly approached.
“Chu Hejun, what’s going on?”
“Nian Jinsui? Why are you here?”
Chu Hejun asked, clearly distressed.
“Xiao Liu has an upset stomach and can’t go on stage. Looks like the performance is a bust.”
“What?” Nian Jinsui’s eyes widened.
This wasn’t part of the novel’s plot!
He pressed further,
“Where’s Ning Liang’an?”
Chu Hejun glanced at Nian Jinsui, recalling Ye Kang’s words. Though he trusted Nian Jinsui more, he decided to test him and replied vaguely, “He’s locked in the warehouse.”
“What?!” Nian Jinsui was stunned. How could Ning Liang’an already be locked up when he hadn’t even acted yet?
Observing Nian Jinsui’s shocked expression, Chu Hejun concluded that he genuinely didn’t seem to know.
Unfortunately, Chu Hejun was wrong. Nian Jinsui wasn’t ignorant—he knew far too much.
Realization dawned on Nian Jinsui. Just like the earlier bullying incident, even if he didn’t take action, as long as someone acted under his name, the plot would progress as if he had.
The plot was a powerful force. Whether or not he intervened, events would still unfold.
And the one who locked Ning Liang’an up? It had to be… Ye Kang!
The answer was obvious.
Recalling that Ye Kang had been absent throughout the gala, Nian Jinsui became increasingly certain that Ye Kang was behind it.
But why hadn’t Chu Hejun gone to rescue Ning Liang’an as the novel dictated?
“Why are you still here?” Nian Jinsui asked anxiously. “Why didn’t you go save Ning Liang’an?”
“Why should I? Heroic rescues are my brother’s thing. Why steal his thunder?” Chu Hejun replied matter-of-factly.
Nian Jinsui froze. Everything was different now.
Wait. If Chu Hejun was present, Chu Heting wouldn’t need to play the piano. Would Chu Heting fill Xiao Liu’s spot instead?
Nian Jinsui’s mind raced. Chu Heting, as the main protagonist, was a jack-of-all-trades in the novel’s world. It wasn’t possible he only played the piano, right?
What was Xiao Liu’s role in the ensemble again?
Suddenly, Xilu’s voice interrupted his thoughts.
[Host, ensure the ensemble performance is successfully completed.]
A chill ran down Nian Jinsui’s spine. He understood what he had to do.
The staff announced, “Next up is the ensemble performance of classic music medleys. Performers, please prepare to go on stage.”
With Ning Liang’an absent, Chu Hejun took charge. “One of our members is sick and can’t perform. We’ll have to cancel.”
The staff member pressed, “Are you serious? Don’t you have a substitute?”
“Where would we find one now? Even if someone steps in, without rehearsals, it’ll be a mess. I won’t present something so unprofessional.”
“Alright, if you’re sure.”
Scanning the faces of the other ensemble members, Nian Jinsui saw disappointment, frustration, and unwillingness.
As someone who had been part of an orchestra in his previous life, Nian Jinsui knew well the hard work and hope that went into every performance.
“Wait!” Nian Jinsui gritted his teeth and called out, “The show will go on. We have a substitute!”
The staff member nodded. “Alright then, get ready. Instruments are being set up on stage.”
Chu Hejun, furious, turned to Nian Jinsui. “What are you doing? We don’t have a substitute!”
Nian Jinsui’s expression turned serious. Facing the ensemble members, he said, “I know how hard you’ve worked over the past month. Now is the time to showcase your efforts. Focus on your parts, and I promise we’ll deliver an excellent performance.”
With that, Nian Jinsui headed toward the stage.
“Wait, Nian Jinsui! You’re the substitute? Are you serious?” Chu Hejun asked in disbelief, blocking his path.
“Yes, it’s me. I don’t have time to explain. Just trust me,” Nian Jinsui replied, hurrying to the stage.
Picking up the sheet music on the stand, he quickly familiarized himself with it. Xiao Liu’s part was for the violin.
The other ensemble members exchanged worried glances.
“I’ve never heard of Nian Jinsui playing the violin. What if he messes up?”
“Yeah, if he messes up, we’ll be humiliated. Should we cancel instead?”
Chu Hejun hesitated. He’d never known Nian Jinsui to play the violin and didn’t want to risk a subpar performance. If they couldn’t meet the standard, he’d rather cancel.
At that moment, Chu Heting and Ning Liang’an finally arrived.
“Why aren’t you on stage yet? They’ve already announced the performance,” Ning Liang’an asked urgently.
Chu Hejun explained succinctly, “Xiao Liu is out sick, and Nian Jinsui is filling in.”
Turning to Chu Heting, he asked, “Brother, did you know Nian Jinsui could play the violin?”
Chu Heting shook his head. “I’ve never heard of it.”
Without hesitation, Ning Liang’an asserted, “I’m the program manager. Listen to me! I trust Young Master Nian. Get on stage now!”
Moved by Ning Liang’an’s determination, Chu Hejun relented. “Fine, I’ll take the risk this time. Let’s go!”
With Ning Liang’an’s decision final, the ensemble members reluctantly followed Chu Hejun onto the stage.
Meanwhile, Qin Chengyu, worried about Nian Jinsui’s prolonged absence, was about to search for him when the emcee’s voice echoed:
“Next up is the ensemble performance of classic music medleys. Please enjoy.”
Reaching for his phone to call Nian Jinsui, Qin Chengyu caught a familiar figure out of the corner of his eye.
Why was Nian Jinsui on stage?
As the crew adjusted the instruments, Nian Jinsui swiftly skimmed the sheet music.
He had watched the rehearsal once and was familiar with the classic pieces, which he had practiced extensively in his past life. Most of the melodies were ingrained in his mind. All he needed was to focus on the transitions and the slight modifications for the ensemble.
