"Why would I lie to you?" Mother Ye rolled her eyes and pulled up a photo on her phone. "One of my friends attended the banquet. She knows how close my son is to Young Master Nian. That day, she happened to see Young Master Nian entering with someone. She didn’t recognize you, so she took a photo and sent it to me, asking if it was you. Take a look yourself—see if it’s true or not."
Ye Kang stared at the photo, dumbfounded. The person in the picture was indeed Qin Chengyu...
He slumped into his chair in disbelief. Since when did Nian Jinsui attend gatherings or banquets without taking him along? Let alone this time, when Ye Kang had insisted on tagging along.
Yet, Nian Jinsui had gone with Qin Chengyu and left him out in the dark.
Nian Jinsui, how could you treat me like this...
At the Imperial Capital Business Academy, cafeteria.
"Chu Hejun, has Ning Liang'an been busy lately? I asked him out for a meal a while back, but he said he didn’t have time. Do you know what he’s been up to?" Nian Jinsui asked while eating.
"He’s probably helping organize next month’s school anniversary. He mentioned it pays well and adds extra credits," Chu Hejun replied. "One of the programs he’s managing is a medley of classic orchestral pieces. He even invited me to play the piano, and I agreed."
"School anniversary..." Nian Jinsui murmured, deep in thought.
"Just wait and see my spectacular performance," Chu Hejun said confidently.
Nian Jinsui’s eyes darkened. Spectacular performance? He must be dreaming. When the time comes, he probably won’t even make it on stage.
After all, Nian Jinsui hadn’t forgotten that the school anniversary was a major plot point in the novel. Moreover, he himself played a pivotal role in that storyline.
The thought filled him with frustration. What sort of mission would Xi Lü assign him this time? Would he be forced to replicate the villainous actions from the novel’s plot?
Despite being friends with Ning Liang'an and Chu Hejun now, would he ultimately have to turn against them because of the storyline?
Noticing Nian Jinsui’s low spirits, Chu Hejun asked with concern, "Nian Jinsui, if you’re bored, why not come watch our rehearsal this afternoon?"
Snapping out of his thoughts, Nian Jinsui declined. "Maybe next time. I have something to do today and need to head home early."
"Alright then."
No one noticed Ye Kang sitting nearby, his expression subtly shifting as if brewing some plan.
“Jinsui, you said you needed to go home early today. Is something going on?” Qin Chengyu asked as soon as they returned to the Nian residence.
“Nothing special. Go put your backpack in your room first. We’ll talk at dinner,” Nian Jinsui said, handing his own backpack to Qin Chengyu. "Take mine too, will you?"
"Okay," Qin Chengyu agreed, taking both bags and heading toward the elevator.
As soon as Qin Chengyu disappeared from sight, Nian Jinsui sprinted to the kitchen.
"Young Master, don’t run! Watch your step!" the butler, Uncle Liu, cautioned behind him.
"Uncle Liu, how’s everything coming along?" Nian Jinsui asked eagerly.
"Don’t worry, Young Master. Everything’s ready. Dinner is full of dishes Young Master Qin likes, and the cake is in the fridge," Uncle Liu reassured.
"Thank goodness you reminded me it’s Qin Chengyu’s birthday today. I almost forgot! It’s his first birthday with us, so we must make it special," Nian Jinsui said excitedly. "Hurry up and get everything set up—I’ll stall him."
"Understood, Young Master."
Uncle Liu’s attentiveness stemmed from observing Nian Jinsui’s genuine care for Qin Chengyu. If this were the original storyline, the butler wouldn’t have bothered reminding Nian Jinsui about any birthdays.
In the Qin family, Qin Chengyu’s parents had passed away, and his older brother Qin Zhuo barely paid attention to him. This neglect led to the unchecked arrogance of Qin Muyun and her mother, as well as the servants’ blatant disrespect.
A master’s attitude dictates a servant’s behavior.
Back in his room, Qin Chengyu was about to head downstairs when he received a call from Nian Jinsui.
"Chengyu, could you grab my tablet for me? I don’t know where I left it—maybe in the bedroom, maybe in the study. Take your time looking. We’ll eat when you come down."
Unaware of the plan, Qin Chengyu hung up and began searching for the tablet. It wasn’t hard to find; a quick query to the smart assistant located it.
When he stepped out of the elevator, the living room was pitch dark. It was only early November, and the days were already getting shorter. By 6 p.m., the house was shrouded in darkness.
"Jinsui?" Qin Chengyu called out, taking a few steps forward. Hearing faint rustling noises from the dining area, he followed the sound.
Suddenly, Nian Jinsui appeared in his line of sight, carrying a cake lit with candles. The warm glow illuminated his face, banishing the darkness in the room—and perhaps in Qin Chengyu’s life.
Qin Chengyu thought.
"Happy birthday to you~ Happy birthday to you~" Nian Jinsui began singing, joined by Uncle Liu and the other staff members.
Qin Chengyu felt an indescribable mix of emotions.
No one had ever remembered his birthday, let alone celebrated it. Over time, he had stopped caring about the date entirely.
But today, he was met with this unexpected surprise.
"How did you find the tablet so fast? We almost weren’t ready!" Nian Jinsui said with a beaming smile as he approached Qin Chengyu. "Make a wish and blow out the candles."
Qin Chengyu’s eyes flickered. A wish?
His current life was already so fulfilling. Was wishing for it to remain this way enough?
"Qin Chengyu, what are you waiting for? The candles are almost burnt out!"
Startled, Qin Chengyu blew out the candles reflexively.
"Did you make a wish?" Nian Jinsui asked, surprised.
"Yes," Qin Chengyu replied after a pause. Whether or not he had, life now was already perfect.
"You’ll surely have your wish come true. Happy birthday, Qin Chengyu," Nian Jinsui said warmly.
The others echoed in unison, "Happy birthday, Young Master Qin!"
"Thank you."
When the lights came on, Qin Chengyu noticed the dining table was laden with an array of dishes.
After the cake was cut, Uncle Liu and the staff each took a slice, leaving the dining room to Nian Jinsui and Qin Chengyu.
The two enjoyed dinner and dessert, chatting happily.
It wasn’t until they were nearly finished that Nian Jinsui remembered he hadn’t given Qin Chengyu his gift yet.
