18. Settled— Proposal Next March
The Earth God entered the courtyard and followed Ming Xi to Ling Cang's side.
"Y-Young Master."
Ling Cang gave an acknowledging hum.
Ming Xi rolled up a couplet that Ling Cang had written and dried, handing it to the Earth God.
"Here you go. The New Year isn't complete without pasting Spring Festival couplets."
The Earth God received it with trembling hands.
"Thank you, Young Lord."
Just like that, the Earth God became a frequent visitor to the courtyard, coming every few days to beg a cup of tea. Gradually, he also came to understand the Divine Emperor Ling Cang's feelings for the young ge'er.
Capital, Cao Residence.
Ming Li holding a writing brush, composing couplets.
Cao Jun sat to one side, brewing hot tea for Shu Ge'er.
"I wonder how Xi'er is doing. He's never spent the New Year away from home before," Shu Ge'er said.
Cao Jun: "Perfect, Ming Li is here too. Why don't we check in on them?"
Ming Li leaned over. "Good idea, good idea!"
Cao Jun called out "Xi'er" three times, and a mirror image appeared.
Ming Xi was lying on a bed, a white cloth on his forehead, his face flushed red.
Shu Ge'er shot to his feet. "What's wrong? What happened?"
Ling Cang answered, "Xi'er suddenly developed a fever yesterday."
Cao Jun calculated something on his fingers. "Oh no. Xi'er's heat cycle has come."
Shu Ge'er: "How could it be so early? According to the normal timeline, his first heat shouldn't be this early."
Ming Li temporarily set aside his amazement at the magical image. A ge'er's heat was crucial, which is why suitable husbands were generally found beforehand. A heat typically lasted three days. How would Ming Xi endure these three days?
In the past, their father often educated him and Ming Qi about these matters, believing it was common knowledge everyone should know.
"Dad, are there other ways to alleviate a ge'er's heat?"
Shu Ge'er shook his head.
"No. Other methods would severely damage Xi'er's health. They can't be used unless it's absolutely necessary."
Cao Jun looked at Ling Cang. "Have you given him any highly potent tonics recently?"
Ling Cang was taken aback for a moment, then instantly understood.
It was because he ate the flat peaches that his heat came early.
He nodded. "It was my oversight. He did eat some."
Cao Jun was speechless.
How potent must they be to bring a heat expected in three years forward so early?
"Do you like Xi'er?"
Ling Cang nodded. "I like him."
If I didn't, I might have already returned to the celestial realm.
Cao Jun said, "Then there are two paths now. One, you help him through his heat and get married after the New Year. The other..."
"...is to suppress it with medicine, but it will damage his foundation. We are Xi'er's fathers. We want least of all to see him suffer."
"But if you have no intention towards him, then don't touch him." Cao Jun stared at Ling Cang, speaking seriously.
Ling Cang gently stroked Ming Xi's cheek.
"I am willing to help him. But I need to hear him say whether he wants me or not."
He leaned down and kissed Ming Xi's forehead. "Xi'er. Xi'er."
Ming Xi slowly opened his eyes, tears welling in them. "Ling Cang, I feel so unwell."
He reached out, asking Ling Cang to hold him.
Ling Cang bent down and picked him up. "Xi'er, your heat has come early. Do you..." He paused.
"...want me?"
Ming Xi nodded dazedly. "I do, I do. I like Ling Cang the most."
"Then will you be my husband?" Ling Cang turned him slightly, looking into his eyes and asking seriously.
Ming Xi sniffled. "Yes."
Ling Cang flicked his sleeve, and the connection to the Cao residence via the mirror image severed.
Ling Cang held him and kissed him. Because Ming Xi's heat had arrived, he was extremely clingy, his arms wrapping around Ling Cang's neck, responding to his kiss.
Ling Cang swiftly removed Ming Xi's clothes. In an instant, he was like a fish, allowing Ling Cang to arrange him as he wished.
Ling Cang particularly loved kissing the floral mark on his collarbone. Ming Xi whimpered softly, unable to bear the sensation, his skin flushed a captivating pink from arousal. Ling Cang's kisses grew more fervent, moving downward, igniting sparks of fire wherever they landed.
Ming Xi's breathing became increasingly rapid, his fingers unconsciously clutching Ling Cang's back.
"Ling Cang~"
"I'm here."
"It hurts."
"Be good, it will stop hurting soon."
...
Ling Cang felt his passion, his movements becoming more urgent. The atmosphere in the room was intensely ambiguous. The candlelight flickered, illuminating their entwined figures.
After who knows how long, Ling Cang finally stopped, holding Ming Xi tightly in his arms, delicately kissing his brows and eyes. Their heartbeats intertwined.
Cao Residence.
Ming Li paced back and forth. Shu Ge'er and Cao Jun also sat in the room.
"Should we try again?" They had already tried over ten times. It seemed the other side had intentionally cut off their "video call."
"Wait a bit longer before trying," Cao Jun said.
After a while, the image from the other side came through. Both were dressed in snow-white inner garments. Ling Cang held a limp Xi'er in his arms. The marks at his collar showed clearly what had just happened.
Shu Ge'er: "Xi'er."
Ling Cang pulled the quilt up higher. "He's much better now. You don't need to worry."
"Next March, I will prepare betrothal gifts and come to the Cao residence to propose. In five days, you can go to Pine Mountain in the north. That is my meeting gift for everyone."
Ling Cang held the person in his arms and spoke unhurriedly.
Ming Li looked at the person in his arms.
"Our Ming Xi has been pampered since childhood. You... you need to be careful with him."
The corners of Ling Cang's mouth lifted slightly.
"Don't worry, I will."
Then he looked at Ming Li for a long moment before saying,
"The person you have your eye on is an assassin. You should also be careful. I don't want my Xi'er, far away from home, to have to worry about you."
Ming Li was stunned, instantly understanding he was referring to Ning Huaiyu, the ge'er who had swindled him out of silver a month ago when he was traveling incognito.
Back then, he was urgently asking for directions and was blocked by the ladies and ge'er from the Meiren Pavilion (Beauty Pavilion). Just as he was getting a headache, that person appeared, standing at the top of the stairs in a striking red robe, looking at him and smiling—a smile that captured his heart and soul at first glance.
He was extremely stunningly beautiful. Other ge'er had their floral marks in hidden places, but his alone was right in the center of his forehead.
When he wasn't smiling, his entire demeanor was as cold as frost, making people afraid to approach easily, yet they couldn't help but be drawn to his peerless beauty. His slender eyebrows were like crescent moons, the slightly upturned corners of his eyes carrying a touch of charm and sharpness. His nose was tall and straight, his thin lips naturally red without needing enhancement. When pressed together lightly, they revealed a stubbornness and pride.
At the time, he had let out a light, derisive laugh.
"Asking for directions at the Meiren Pavilion—you're the first."
Ming Li stared dumbfounded at the person, being teased by the ge'er and young ladies downstairs: "Another one mesmerized by the Pavilion Master."
Ming Li came back to his senses. "My apologies for the rudeness."
That person walked down the stairs, smiling.
"A guest is a guest. The Meiren Pavilion has countless beauties. Why doesn't the young master choose one?"
"Then can I choose the Pavilion Master?" Ming Li asked with a smile.
The person was stunned for a moment, then suddenly threw his head back and laughed. "Alright."
He lifted his face, smiling, took Ming Li's right wrist, and led him step by step to his room on the second floor.
Pushing the door open, the interior was exceedingly luxurious, a dazzling array of treasures. Exquisite paintings and calligraphy hung on the walls. The table held precious porcelain and jade ornaments. Wisps of blue smoke rose from the incense burner, emitting a subtle, elegant fragrance. The bedding on the bed was embroidered with intricate patterns, soft and smooth.
Ming Li stood somewhat stiffly at the door, but that person gently pulled him inside and closed the door.
"Don't be nervous,"
that person said softly in Ming Li's ear, his voice gentle and pleasing.
Then that person walked to the bed, sat down, and patted the spot beside him, gesturing for Ming Li to come over.
Ming Li hesitated for a moment but still walked over and slowly sat down.
Then that person took off his outer robe and was about to undo his belt when Ming Li pressed down on his hand.
"Young Master, what are you doing?" that person said with a smile.
Ming Li stood up. "Pavilion Master, there's no need for this. I only came in to ask for directions."
That person's smiling eyes turned cold. "How boring!"
Then he stood up, put his clothes back on, and turned his back to Ming Li.
"Go out and turn right."
