Tang Keyi instantly backed down, forcing an awkward smile.
"No need, no need. Let bygones be bygones. President Qin, just tell me what compensation you want, and I’ll make it happen."
There was no way Tang Keyi wanted to hear Qin Zhiyan recount his actions from that night—
he was afraid his toes would curl so hard
they’d dig through the floor from sheer embarrassment.
Qin Zhiyan also didn’t want to push too hard and scare Tang Keyi away,
so he simply said,
"Then treat me to a meal."
[That’s it?]
Afraid Qin Zhiyan might change his mind, Tang Keyi immediately agreed.
"Deal! Absolutely! I’ll make sure you’re satisfied!"
Tang Keyi leaned back in his office chair, chin propped on his hand, deep in thought.
Treating Qin Zhiyan to a meal—simple in theory, tricky in practice.
He had no idea what Qin Zhiyan liked to eat.
But surely the most expensive, high-end restaurant couldn’t go wrong, right?
Just then, Cong Qiao emerged from Qin Zhiyan’s office, and Tang Keyi called out to him.
"Cong Qiao, got a sec?"
Cong Qiao turned.
"What is it, Young Master Tang?"
"Does President Qin have any favorite foods? Or any dietary restrictions?"
Cong Qiao answered,
"President Qin doesn’t have any particular preferences when it comes to food, and he doesn’t have any dietary restrictions either."
"Are there any restaurants in the capital that he especially likes?"
Cong Qiao was about to reply when the click of high heels approached from nearby.
"Hey, Cong Qiao."
Tang Keyi and Cong Qiao turned to look.
A tall, stunning woman with wavy hair,
dressed in a red dress and wearing flawless makeup,
greeted Cong Qiao with a bright smile.
Cong Qiao was momentarily taken aback.
"Director Ning, you’re back? Why didn’t you let us know in advance?"
"That’s right."
Ning Muxi swept her long hair over her shoulder.
"My overseas assignment wrapped up, so I decided to come back quietly—wanted to surprise everyone."
"You’ve worked hard, Director Ning."
"Contributing to the company is its own reward—no need for formalities."
Ning Muxi offered a polite response before shifting her gaze to Tang Keyi.
"And this is…?"
Cong Qiao introduced them.
"This is the new assistant, Tang Keyi. This is Director Ning from the Project Department."
Tang Keyi smiled and greeted her first.
"Hello, Director Ning. I’m Tang Keyi."
"Hello."
Ning Muxi studied Tang Keyi as she replied, then added,
"I’ll go in and see President Qin first."
"I’ll check with President Qin."
Tang Keyi reached for the office line to call Qin Zhiyan.
But Ning Muxi stopped him.
"No need. I want to surprise him."
She walked past them, knocked on the office door, and entered.
Tang Keyi’s hand still hovered over the phone,
his eyes fixed on Ning Muxi as he watched the office door close behind her,
leaving him momentarily dazed.
"Young Master Tang?"
Cong Qiao prompted quietly.
Tang Keyi slowly withdrew his gaze and looked at Cong Qiao,
his fingers tightening slightly around the phone.
"Are Director Ning and President Qin close? Was she working abroad before?"
"Fairly close. Director Ning and President Qin were university classmates. She’s very capable—joined our group right after graduation and worked her way up to her current position as Project Director. She was with President Qin overseas for business expansion. President Qin returned first, while Director Ning stayed behind to wrap things up."
Cong Qiao paused.
"Earlier, you were asking about President Qin’s favorite restaurants?"
For some reason,
Tang Keyi’s enthusiasm for learning about Qin Zhiyan’s preferences had suddenly waned.
"Never mind. I’ll ask you another time if I need to."
Hearing the knock, Qin Zhiyan looked up.
His expression remained as indifferent as still water when he saw who it was.
"President Qin, aren’t you surprised to see me?"
Ning Muxi approached.
"I wanted to give you a proper surprise."
"I’ve read the project progress reports. If you weren’t back by now, I’d question your efficiency."
Qin Zhiyan coolly returned his gaze to his computer screen and continued working.
"But procedure dictates you should report to the group first. Shouldn’t a director know the proper formalities?"
Ning Muxi’s smile stiffened slightly,
the hopeful light in her eyes dimming.
"I was too eager to return and didn’t think it through."
"Given your satisfactory project performance, I’ll let it slide this time. Check in with HR first. Starting tomorrow? Or do you want a few more days off?"
Qin Zhiyan spoke while still focused on his work.
"I’ll get my office in order this afternoon and start tomorrow."
"Mhm."
Qin Zhiyan responded indifferently.
When he noticed Ning Muxi still standing there, he glanced up again.
"Something else?"
Ning Muxi maintained her poised, elegant smile.
"Are you free tonight? I booked the restaurant where we used to have our class reunions. How about dinner?"
Qin Zhiyan thought of the meal Tang Keyi owed him.
Knowing Tang Keyi’s impatience, there was a good chance he’d book it for tonight.
"No, I have plans tonight."
"Oh. Next time, then."
Ning Muxi replied with a hint of regret, then added,
"By the way, that assistant outside seems new."
"Mhm."
Qin Zhiyan’s finger paused slightly on the mouse at the mention of Tang Keyi.
"He’s quite good-looking."
"Mhm."
Another noncommittal response.
"He must be popular with the ladies in the company."
A shadow flickered in Ning Muxi’s eyes.
Qin Zhiyan finally stopped what he was doing and looked at her with displeasure.
"Did you come in just to gossip?"
Ning Muxi masked her embarrassment.
"I’ll take my leave then, President Qin."
"Mhm."
Ning Muxi had only taken a few steps toward the door when she heard him call out,
"Wait."
Her lips curved into a perfect smile as she turned her head slightly—
her most flattering angle.
Unfortunately, Qin Zhiyan didn’t even look up.
His tone was cold.
"Next time, have the assistant check with me before entering. Don’t bring back casual overseas habits after a few years abroad."
Ning Muxi’s carefully crafted smile shattered instantly.
"Understood, President Qin. My apologies for today."
"Leave."
Gritting her teeth, Ning Muxi straightened her back.
By the time her hand touched the doorknob,
she had regained her poised, dignified demeanor.
"Assistant Tang."
Tang Keyi looked up to see Ning Muxi smiling radiantly,
as if her meeting with Qin Zhiyan had gone wonderfully.
"Director Ning."
Tang Keyi responded.
Ning Muxi walked over to Tang Keyi and asked casually,
"Assistant Tang, which university did you graduate from?"
Though Tang Keyi’s alma mater was famously known as a school where wealthy heirs went to gild their resumes,
he still proudly named it.
Ning Muxi’s eyes flickered with concealed disdain,
instantly forming her own conclusions about how Tang Keyi had landed his position as Qin Zhiyan’s assistant.
