MSRBMH Ch 18

Mia had prepared two suits—one black, one white.

Once the two men changed and stood side by side by the car, both wearing stern expressions, they looked like a pair of ominous envoys—one light, one dark.

As the assistant, the task of driving naturally fell to Su Yu.

He walked to the driver’s side and reached out to open the door, only for a large hand to cover his.

Ji Yanli spoke beside his ear, guiding his hand to pull the door open.

“I’ll drive.”

Not having to drive was a good thing. Su Yu was happy to take it easy.

He pulled his hand out of Ji Yanli’s grip.

“Then I’ll trouble you, President Ji.”

“Wife, don’t call me that. I don’t like it…”

The moment Ji Yanli opened his mouth, the term slipped out effortlessly. Beside him, Su Yu let out a soft tsk at the address.

Ji Yanli immediately shut his mouth and bent down to sit in the driver’s seat.

The banquet was being held at the Xie family’s mountain estate. The Xie patriarch had recently celebrated a joyous occasion—his only son had married, and the bride was a young lady from a prominent family.

Her background and status far surpassed the Xie family’s.

Overjoyed, Old Master Xie had invited all the major families to join in the festivities—mostly to show off.

His son had always been weak-willed, often mocked and looked down upon by others. Now that he had not only married well but also secured a major business deal, the Xie family was eager to flaunt their newfound prestige.

The Xie estate was nestled deep in the mountains. Though serene, the road there was rough and winding. Fortunately, Ji Yanli’s car had high ground clearance—otherwise, their backsides would’ve been sore from the bumpy ride.

“I swear, who the hell holds a banquet in the middle of nowhere like this? If I didn’t know better, I’d think they were planning to dump a body here,” Su Yu grumbled as he stepped out of the car.

Before them stood wide-open gates, through which they could glimpse a garden blooming with pink roses—clearly no expense had been spared.

“Old Master Xie’s health isn’t good, so he can’t move around easily. This is where he usually lives,” Ji Yanli explained as he walked to Su Yu’s side.

Dressed in his crisp black suit, he looked even paler and more striking than usual.

Hearing this, Su Yu suddenly realized something odd.

Even though Ji Yanli had supposedly lost his memory, not only did he remember how to handle work, but he also recalled every little detail about the major families’ affairs.

So why was he the only thing Ji Yanli remembered wrong?

“Tell me the truth—are you faking amnesia just to mess with me?” Su Yu never minced words. He fixed the man beside him with a sharp glare.

Ji Yanli blinked slowly, looking utterly baffled—and innocent. “Wife, what are you talking about?”

“Stop calling me wife!”

Some habits really died hard. A dog couldn’t—whatever.

Su Yu snorted. “I’ll settle this with you after the banquet.”

Letting Ji Yanli keep calling him wife wasn’t a long-term solution. He needed to make it clear that the two of them were like fire and water—utterly incompatible.

The two of them walked through the gates together.

Many guests had already arrived. Near the entrance, two men were chatting, both dressed in suits and looking every bit the respectable gentlemen—though their words were anything but.

“That Xie family kid really lucked out. His wife’s not only beautiful but loaded. Wonder what she sees in him—maybe he’s exceptionally well-endowed?”

Another young master smirked, raising an eyebrow. “Who knows? Maybe he’s just really good in bed.”

Su Yu usually couldn’t care less about gossip, but he couldn’t stand people like this—all pretenses and no substance.

As he passed them, he deliberately paused and spoke just loudly enough for them to hear. “What’s the matter? Too small yourself, so you assume everyone else is bigger?”

His voice was ice-cold. The two men stiffened before turning around to see who dared interrupt them.

Their eyes landed squarely on Su Yu.

One of them scanned Su Yu’s face, his initial fear fading as a mocking grin took its place.

“Oh, if it isn’t the Young Master Su.”

Su Yu didn’t spare them a single glance and was about to walk away when the young master couldn’t resist adding, “Can’t even manage your own affairs, yet you’ve got time to meddle in others’ business?”

He nudged his friend, expecting agreement.

But his friend didn’t laugh. Instead, his voice trembled. “P-President Ji…”

Ji Yanli didn’t respond. He merely swept his gaze over the two of them. Though he didn’t say a word, the look in his eyes was more than enough to make them shrink back.

The previously smug young master instantly fell silent, not daring to utter another word.

Su Yu knew Ji Yanli was wearing the exact expression he used to despise—cold, arrogant, untouchable.

Yet, for some reason, his mood lifted.

“Let’s go,” he said casually, sensing Ji Yanli fall into step beside him.

Behind them, the young masters were practically goggling.

“Weren’t those two supposed to be at each other’s throats? Since when did they start hanging out?”

“Who knows? Did you see the look on his face? So damn cocky.”

“That Ji brat only acts high and mighty because of his family’s fortune. Well, his old man’s dead now. With all those stubborn old farts in the company refusing to obey him, he’ll be run ragged soon enough.”

Inside the main hall, the banquet was already in full swing.

Shen Le, who had been drinking by the entrance with Lin Yanjun, was the first to notice the two newcomers. He immediately made his way over.

“Su-ge, we’ve been trying to get you out for drinks these past few days. Where’ve you been hiding?” Lin Yanjun said.

Shen Le slung an arm around Su Yu’s shoulders, giving him a playful squeeze. “Yeah, you’ve been slacking. Let’s go fishing soon—it’s been ages.”

Before Su Yu could respond, Shen Le’s arm was abruptly seized and yanked down.

“Fuck! Who the hell—ow, that hurts!” Shen Le scowled, shaking his arm.

But the rest of his curses died in his throat when he met a pair of pitch-black eyes.

Ji Yanli was staring at him, brows furrowed, expression dark—like a wolf guarding its prey.

“P-President Ji, what a surprise to see you here,” Shen Le forced out an awkward laugh, shooting Su Yu a frantic look.

His lips silently mouthed: What the hell are you doing with him?!

Su Yu sighed inwardly and shrugged. There was no point explaining—no one would believe him anyway.

With most guests now present, the Xie family’s banquet officially began.

The Xie heir was leading his gentle, graceful wife around, greeting guests one by one.

Old Master Xie, seated in a wheelchair pushed by a servant, looked prouder than ever—his smile practically reaching his ears.

Since they were still some distance away, Su Yu figured it’d be a while before the hosts reached them.

Beside him, Ji Yanli had just turned down the fifth young master or lady offering a toast. His patience was clearly wearing thin.

Undoing a button on his shirt collar, he muttered, “When does this end?”

Su Yu glanced at him, then lowered his eyes to the dark red wine swirling in his glass. “What, not happy about being so popular?”

“I don’t want their attention. Only yours.”

Ji Yanli’s voice was low, the upward lilt at the end inexplicably intimate.

Su Yu’s ears burned. Annoyed, he snapped, “Didn’t I tell you to stop talking nonsense earlier?”

“Little brother?”

Just as Su Yu raised his hand to smack the man beside him, a familiar voice called out.
