Chapter 141 "I Won’t Run Anymore."

Hearing the faint but unmistakably panicked rustling nearby,

Qin Chengyu’s lips curved into a slow, satisfied smile.

So his Suisui really wanted to play a game with him?

How could he possibly refuse?

He paused the countdown, even strolling leisurely through the living room—

giving Nian Jinsui ample time to hide.

Meanwhile, Nian Jinsui was freaking out like an ant on a hot skillet, his mind racing.

Why is Qin Chengyu back so early?

How did he know I was here?

Does that mean… I’ve been exposed?!

He must’ve suspected me at lunch!

Ugh! Never try to out-scheme a psychotic villain!

What do I do now?

Turn back and apologize?

But the memory of Qin Chengyu’s voice sent a shiver down his spine—like being watched by something cold and reptilian.

And when he thought of all the vicious things Qin Chengyu had done before, Nian Jinsui wanted to cry.

How did I fall for this lunatic?!

No time to dwell. Hide first, think later.

Having never been inside this villa, Nian Jinsui had no idea which room was which.

He dashed to the farthest door on the second floor,

twisted the knob—unlocked!—and slipped inside, locking it behind him.

The room appeared to be Qin Zhuo’s study, but Nian Jinsui had no interest in sightseeing.

He scanned for windows or balconies, hoping for another escape route.

Then—a sound.

Nian Jinsui froze.

The noise came from under the desk.

Is someone hiding there?!

Did Qin Chengyu predict I’d come here and plant someone to watch me?

"Who’s there? Come out! I see you!"

he demanded sharply.

A figure crawled out from beneath the desk.

When Nian Jinsui recognized the sleazy face, his eyes widened.

"Qin Chenglu? Why are you here?"

"Why not? This is the Qin family. What’s strange about me being here?"

Qin Chenglu kicked aside a chair and stood, eyeing Nian Jinsui up and down.

"Nian Jinsui, long time no see. Heard you married Qin Chengyu. Seems like you’re living well."

Nian Jinsui studied him.

Qin Chenglu had grown gaunt, his face unshaven, clothes wrinkled—

a far cry from his former polished appearance.

"Butler Wu said you and your mother went traveling. Did you just get back? No one mentioned it."

In the original novel,

Qin Chenglu and Qin Muyu hadn’t left the Qin estate—

but their lives had become miserable, stripped of all financial support, forced to live in humiliating dependence.

Yet since Nian Jinsui arrived, he’d never seen them, so he’d believed Butler Wu’s excuse about them "traveling."

"Traveling?"

Qin Chenglu laughed bitterly.

"We don’t have a cent to our names. Months ago, Qin Chengyu threw us into some rundown apartment. Do you know how we’ve survived? We barely even eat!"

Of course, Qin Chengyu wouldn’t let these two stay at the estate to bother Nian Jinsui.

So he’d deviated from the original plot—kicking them out entirely.

Used to luxury, they must’ve suffered terribly.

"You’re a grown man with hands and feet. Couldn’t you get a job?"

Nian Jinsui frowned.

"Wait—why are you here now…?"

Then it hit him.

This is Qin Zhuo’s study.

Qin Chenglu’s hiding here for a reason!

Qin Chenglu’s eyes gleamed as he stepped closer.

"Since you caught me, I might as well admit it. Yes, I snuck in. After seeing the news about Grandpa’s stroke, I staked out the back door for days. Today was my chance—"

Just then, Qin Chengyu’s voice echoed from outside the room.

"Suisui… why did you run? Why do you keep leaving me? Hide well—don’t let me find you too soon."

He sounded like he’d just reached the second floor. Panicked,

Nian Jinsui opened his mouth to call out—

Shink.

gleaming fruit knife pressed against his throat.

"Don’t make a sound,"

Qin Chenglu hissed.

"Call him, and I’ll slit your throat right now. I’ve got nothing left to lose."

To prove his point, he pressed slightly—drawing a thin red line on Nian Jinsui’s neck.

Wincing, Nian Jinsui fell silent.

Qin Chengyu’s footsteps faded—likely searching other rooms first.

"Qin Chenglu, calm down. Let’s talk this through,"

Nian Jinsui said carefully.

"So you’re trying to escape too?"

Qin Chenglu’s eyes lit up with a new idea.

"How about this—I’ll help you."

"You know a way out?"

"How do you think I got in? I know this house better than Qin Chengyu ever will. Grandpa doted on me—this study has a jewelry safe, and he even gave me the code."

Qin Chenglu jingled his bulging pockets.

"This is enough for the rest of my life. So, Nian Jinsui—stop wasting time. I’ll get you out."

But Nian Jinsui refused without hesitation.

"No. I’m not running."

He knew exactly what Qin Chenglu represented in Qin Chengyu’s life—

a bully, an executioner, the one who’d destroyed Qin Chengyu’s innocence.

That bright-eyed, sweet child Nian Jinsui had glimpsed during the mushroom poisoning incident—

Qin Chenglu had killed him long ago.

If he escaped with Qin Chenglu now,

he’d be siding with Qin Chengyu’s tormentor—betraying him in the worst possible way.

How would that make him any different from the original Nian Jinsui?

Qin Chengyu was already fragile. Even if he forgave Nian Jinsui out of love,

this would leave a permanent scar.

And even if Qin Chengyu loved him enough to overlook it—

Nian Jinsui could never forgive himself.

No.

No matter what, he wouldn’t do this.
