Chapter 50 What He Needs Isn't a Brother

Qin Chengyu wanted to refuse, but Nian Jinsui glared at him and said,

"Qin Chengyu, I’m still mad at you. If you keep nagging, I’ll have someone tie you up to apply the medicine!"

At this point, Qin Chengyu could only hope to calm Nian Jinsui down. Silently, he turned around to fetch the first-aid kit.

"Use your good hand," Nian Jinsui reminded him sharply.

After Qin Chengyu returned with the kit, Nian Jinsui carefully disinfected the wounds with iodine, applied ointment, and wrapped them with gauze.

Throughout the process, Qin Chengyu didn’t make a sound. Nian Jinsui couldn’t help but think to himself: Qin Chengyu truly lives up to his reputation as the villain of the novel—his tolerance for pain is almost unreal.

"For the next few days, make sure to avoid water and don’t strain yourself. When I change the dressing next time, if I find your injuries have worsened, I won’t go easy on you!" Nian Jinsui instructed. "Alright, take off your shirt."

Qin Chengyu looked at him with surprise, hesitating to speak.

"I said take it off," Nian Jinsui demanded, his patience running thin.

Left with no choice, Qin Chengyu complied.

Nian Jinsui hadn’t forgotten that Qin Chengyu had been hit by a chair during the confrontation in the private room.

Sure enough, Qin Chengyu’s left shoulder and upper arm were covered in bruises.

Nian Jinsui’s earlier anger flared up again. "Qin Chengyu, are you a block of wood? You just stood there and let him hit you? Can’t you dodge?"

When Qin Chengyu remained silent, Nian Jinsui sighed and began applying medicinal liniment to his bruises.

"I didn’t expect you to look pale and delicate despite eating so much. You’re surprisingly thin," Nian Jinsui teased, squeezing the muscles on Qin Chengyu’s arm.

Qin Chengyu stiffened immediately.

"But you should exercise more in the future. Otherwise, you’ll keep getting pushed around by people like Qin Chengluo."

Qin Chengyu’s eyes darkened, and he silently took note of Nian Jinsui’s words.

"Chengyu, how did you get those scars?" Nian Jinsui asked, pointing to several small, round scars on Qin Chengyu’s arm.

"Those were from cigarette burns—Qin Chengluo did them."

Nian Jinsui froze, then pointed to a long, thin scar below Qin Chengyu’s collarbone. "What about this one?"

"That’s from when Qin Chengluo played darts as a child."

Listening to Qin Chengyu’s indifferent tone and seeing his expressionless face, Nian Jinsui was at a loss for words.

How much suffering has Qin Chengyu endured?

No wonder he became so disillusioned with the world. No wonder he turned so dark and pessimistic. No wonder he met such a tragic end in the novel...

Sensing Nian Jinsui’s change in mood, Qin Chengyu called out softly, "Jinsui?"

"Chengyu, he won’t be able to bully you anymore. From now on, no one will bully you!" Nian Jinsui declared with determination. Then, he added, "And you’re not allowed to let yourself be bullied either!"

Seeing the resolve and protectiveness in Nian Jinsui’s eyes, a faint smile appeared on Qin Chengyu’s face.

As expected, Nian Jinsui always felt pity for those who suffered.

"I understand, Jinsui. I won’t let this happen again."

"I remember you’re about two months younger than me, so from now on, I’ll treat you like a little brother. I’ll make sure to protect you and never let anyone bully you!"

Technically, I’m five years older than him... Nian Jinsui thought with some amusement.

However, Qin Chengyu’s gaze hardened, and the faint smile vanished.

What he needed wasn’t a brother.

By blood, wasn’t Qin Chengluo considered his brother? Yet all he brought was endless pain.

He would never see Nian Jinsui as a brother.

Unaware of Qin Chengyu’s inner thoughts, Nian Jinsui suddenly remembered something. What if the system asks me to bully Qin Chengyu? Wouldn’t that make me a hypocrite?

To be safe, Nian Jinsui said, "But you know how spoiled I am. If I accidentally bully you, don’t hold it against me."

"I won’t, Jinsui. I would never blame you."

Hearing this, Nian Jinsui finally felt somewhat reassured.

At least this way, he wouldn’t have to worry about following the novel’s tragic trajectory.

Back in his room, Qin Chengyu instinctively raised his hand, intending to clench it into a fist. But when he saw the clean white gauze wrapped around it, he hesitated.

This gauze had been applied by Nian Jinsui.

He shouldn’t dirty it.

If he did, Nian Jinsui would be upset. He couldn’t afford to anger him again.

Lying on the bed, Qin Chengyu’s mind replayed the mocking words spoken by Qin Chengluo and his companions in the private room earlier.

They had called him Nian Jinsui’s dog.

The words were harsh and humiliating. But why didn’t they bother him?

In fact, he realized... he didn’t entirely dislike the idea.

To be Nian Jinsui’s dog.

At the Chu Residence:

"Brother Ting, Ning Liang’an found out you sent me to protect him," Chu Hejun said.

Noticing Chu Heting’s disapproving look, Chu Hejun quickly explained, "It wasn’t me who spilled the beans! He figured it out himself."

"What did he say?"

"He asked me to thank you, but I told him to thank you in person. Isn’t that thoughtful of me?" Chu Hejun replied smugly.

Chu Heting smirked. "Not bad. How’s he doing at the academy?"

"I think he’s doing well," Chu Hejun replied after a moment of thought. Then, hesitating, he added, "Brother Ting, based on what I’ve observed, it doesn’t seem like Nian Jinsui has been bullying Ning Liang’an."

Chu Heting raised an eyebrow, looking slightly surprised. "I didn’t expect you to speak up for Nian Jinsui."

"I’m not defending him. I’m just stating the facts. I can’t let a grudge from childhood make me falsely accuse him," Chu Hejun replied.

Chu Heting chuckled. "Grudge? You call your childish squabbles a grudge?"

Chu Hejun was momentarily at a loss for words but eventually said, "I’m just reporting what I’ve observed, neither defending him nor holding grudges."

"Got it," Chu Heting nodded. "What about you? Do you plan to stay at the academy?"

Chu Hejun thought of his conversations with Ning Liang’an and hesitated. "I have nothing else to do right now, so I’ll stay a bit longer."

He wanted to reevaluate someone.

Meanwhile, at the hospital:

Rushing to the hospital after receiving a notification, Qin Muyun’s heart ached as she saw Qin Chengluo lying on the bed, groaning in pain.

"Son, are you okay? Who hurt you like this? Who dared to do this to you?"

"Mom, my hand hurts, my shoulder hurts, even my butt hurts... everything hurts," Qin Chengluo wailed. "It was Qin Chengyu! Mom, I have to get revenge!"

"Qin Chengyu? How did this happen? Where did he find the guts?"

After hearing the full story from Qin Chengluo, Qin Muyun was both furious and resentful.

"That Qin Chengyu is such a disaster! If it weren’t for him, you could have fully marked Nian Jinsui today. Then, with the Nian family on our side, your grandfather would have looked at you differently!"

"Qin Chengyu ruined my plans! I won’t let him off!"
